Digital legacy

Your whole digital life. Secured for those you love.

Your digital legacy is everything you leave behind online and on your devices: accounts, photos, documents, digital money and messages. With oldr you decide what should be kept, handed over or deleted – and who takes care of it.

Two kinds of digital legacy

What has a value, and what is priceless

Digital assets with financial value, such as cryptocurrency and domains, are part of the estate. They must be listed in the estate inventory (bouppteckning) and can be bequeathed like any other property.

The personal – photos, emails and messages – rarely has financial value but often matters most. Without a plan it can be lost when accounts are closed or no one finds the login.

A digital legacy is about both. Those closest to you should be able to find what is worth something – and keep what is worth the most.

Plan in four steps

How to plan your digital legacy

  1. Make a list

Write down your accounts, devices, cloud services and digital assets. Start with email – it unlocks most of the rest.

  2. Decide what should happen

Should the account be kept, memorialised, handed over or deleted? Write it down clearly for each item.

  3. Choose who takes care of it

One person can be responsible for the practical things and another for the family photos. Tell them you have a plan.

  4. Keep it current

New accounts and devices come along. Review the list when something changes, or at least once a year.

Common questions

About digital legacy

What is a digital legacy?

Your digital legacy is everything you leave behind online and on your devices: accounts, photos, documents, digital money and messages. Some of it has financial value, some only personal value.

Are digital assets part of the estate inventory?

Yes, if they have financial value. Cryptocurrency and other digital assets must be listed in the Swedish estate inventory (bouppteckning) like any other property.

Can I bequeath my digital assets?

Yes. Assets with financial value, such as cryptocurrency, can be bequeathed like any other property. Make sure the heir can also access them – for example by keeping the keys in the vault.

What is the difference between a digital legacy and a digital estate?

A digital legacy is what you plan while you are alive. A digital estate is what those closest to you have to handle after a death. The better the plan, the simpler the estate.

How do my relatives access my photos in the cloud?

It depends on the service. Apple and Google have their own features where you can appoint in advance who gets access. Set them up, and note in the vault which services you use.
